Is rafting safe on the Wolf River? This is not an amusement park ride but an unguided white water rafting trip down a natural flowing river. All rafting has inherent dangers as water can be swift; a river contains rapids, falls and submerged boulders. It is recommended that all rafters wear the life jackets that are provided or you’re welcome to bring your own. Having a helmet will provide extra safety when encountering falls and can be rented from our office. Shotgun Eddy also recommends knowing how to swim as this may save your life if you are ejected from your raft. Drinking alcohol is not recommended while rafting. All rafters are provided transportation to your departure area and pickup at your destination. We do not offer guided trips. Shotgun Eddy cannot monitor your trip while you are on the river so common sense will provide for a safe rafting experience. Prior to your departure safety instructions are given by the knowledgable staff. If you have any questions or concerns, please ask.
What to bring. The rapids will get you wet, so choose clothing accordingly. During warm weather shorts, tee shirts or swim wear is appropriate. Nylon jackets, fast drying pants and tops in cool weather. Wetsuits and helmets are available for a small additional fee. For footwear, we recommend tennis shoes or river shoes such as Tevas or wet suit boots. Bring a change of clothes, dry shoes and a towel. Hats, sunglasses, sunscreen, bug repellent will help protect you from the sun and insects. NO CANS OR BOTTLES are allowed on the river. Please bring a canteen or thermos jug. If you plan to bring food we suggest a small cooler with Tupperware containers. Prices include all equipment and transportation for your rafting trip.
What is the water level? The water level of the Wolf River varies on a daily basis. This fluctuation will determine the quality of your trip. The higher the water level, the faster your trip, the lower the level, the slower your trip. To determine the current water level go to the link at the USGS. The numbers will indicate the amount of water flowing in the river. Use the discharge, cubic feet per second graph.

450-700 High water level, fast rafting.
700 and above. Very fast water. Hang On !!!
What will the weather be like on your day of rafting? Shotgun Eddy cannot predict weather so the best thing to do is check with any online weather site such as the Weather Channel or Wunderground to get an idea of current and future weather reports. (Use White Lake, WI location) Bring appropriate clothing. Please do not call Shotgun Eddy for weather forecasts.
How did Shotgun Eddy get started? John Peters and his wife Anna Marie started Shotgun Eddy in 1972. The name Shotgun Eddy is taken from the rapids which are located just up river from the office. The names of the rapids and falls on the Wolf River were given by the early loggers to identify the location of log jams. Logging is no longer done on the river, but like the log jams, the names stuck. Now in the second generation the children are carrying on the rafting experience for today’s generations. In loving memory of our parents who founded Shotgun Eddy.
